How Long Does It Take to Prepare for BMT in Singapore? (Packing & Training Guide)

Your National Service (NS) enlistment day is coming up—excited? Nervous? Wondering how long you need to prepare? Preparing for Basic Military Training (BMT) in Singapore isn’t just about packing your bag; it’s also about getting physically and mentally ready.

For most recruits, a proper BMT preparation timeline should start at least 8-12 weeks before enlistment to ensure fitness, packing, and mental readiness. Here’s a breakdown of how long you should spend on each part of your preparation.

How Long Before BMT Should You Start Preparing?

If you want a smooth transition into BMT, it’s best to start preparing at least two to three months before enlistment. This gives you enough time to train physically, break in your boots, and get all your necessary documents and gear in order.

For those who are already fit, four to six weeks of light preparation may be enough, but for recruits with little to no fitness background, starting at least three months ahead will make a big difference in avoiding unnecessary struggles in camp.

Aside from physical readiness, packing should ideally begin two weeks before enlistment to ensure you have everything you need without last-minute stress.

How Long Does It Take to Pack for BMT?

Packing shouldn’t take more than a day, but it’s best to start at least two weeks before enlistment to allow time for last-minute purchases. Many enlistees realize at the last minute that they forgot key items like a good power bank, comfortable slippers, or extra hangers—things that will make life in camp much easier.

If you’re wondering what to bring, here is my essential BMT packing list:

  • NRIC (required for check-in)
  • Enlistment Letter
  • Passport-Sized Photo (Digital & Physical Copy)
  • Bank Account Details (for NS pay deposit)
  • School Certificates & Transcripts (save PDFs on your phone)
  • Emergency Contact Information
  • Body Wash & Shampoo (2-in-1)
  • Face Wash
  • Toothbrush & Toothpaste
  • Deodorant
  • Fast-Dry Microfiber Towel
  • Vaseline / Anti-Blister Cream
  • Nail Clippers
  • Razor & Shaving Foam
  • Cotton Buds
  • Toilet Paper (2 Rolls)
  • Clothes Hangers (x10)
  • Laundry Detergent / Soap
  • Disinfectant Spray / Febreze
  • Cloth Pegs
  • Underwear (5-6 Pairs, preferably quick-dry)
  • Socks (Extra Pairs)

  • Small Torchlight

Keep note that some of these items can be bought at e-mart so dont panic if you forget some of these items!

How Long Does It Take to Get Physically Ready for BMT?

Physical preparation for BMT depends on your current fitness level. If you are already active and meet the IPPT pass requirements, then four to six weeks of training should be enough to sharpen your endurance. However, for recruits who struggle with running, push-ups, or overall stamina, training should begin at least eight to twelve weeks before enlistment to avoid struggling in camp.

A good training plan should include:

  • Running at least three times a week to build stamina for the 2.4km run.
  • Push-ups, core exercises, and basic strength training to prepare for bodyweight drills.
  • Breaking in your boots early by wearing them for long walks to prevent blisters.

Recruits who fail the pre-enlistment IPPT test may have to undergo an additional eight-week Physical Training Phase (PTP) before BMT starts, making their total training time even longer. To avoid this, start training as early as possible.

How Long Does It Take to Adjust to BMT Life?

BMT is a major lifestyle change, and most recruits take two to four weeks to fully adjust to military routines. The first week is usually the toughest—waking up early, following strict discipline, and adapting to bunk life can be overwhelming.

By the second or third week, recruits generally become more accustomed to the training schedule, and by the fourth week, most start feeling comfortable with the physical demands. However, mental challenges, such as homesickness or adapting to strict regimentation, may take longer for some recruits.

To mentally prepare before enlistment:

  • Get enough sleep in the weeks leading up to BMT, as sleep deprivation is common in training.
  • Start following a strict daily routine (waking up early, exercising regularly) to ease the transition.
  • Learn stress management techniques, as some recruits struggle with the sudden change in environment.

Final Thoughts: How Long Should You Prepare for BMT?

For a smooth transition into BMT, the recommended preparation timeline is:

  • Fitness training – At least eight to twelve weeks before enlistment, depending on your current fitness level.
  • PackingStart two weeks before to avoid last-minute rushing.
  • Mental readiness – Expect to take at least two to four weeks to fully adjust to military life.

By preparing early, you’ll avoid unnecessary stress, perform better in training, and start your NS journey with confidence.
